Urban Decay Glide On Eye Pencil Vault

1 May

urban-decay-glide-on-eye-pencil-vaultsI so wish I was writing about this product because I had a set to review, but I’m afraid the new Urban Decay Glide On Eye Pencil Vault  – featuring 40 full size eye pencils in various shades – will have to remain a dream purchase for me.

Soon to be on sale from at an eye-watering £240, this set nevertheless saves a whopping £320 on the price of buying each pencil individually (£14 per pencil, in case you’re interested).

Just imagine having that much choice! I love a good eye pencil, and find it’s a much more flattering and easy way to add a splash of colour to the face than eye shadow.

What’s more, these Urban Decay pencils are good for your peepers as they’re enriched with vitamin E, jojoba oil and cotton oil.

A girl can but dream!

The Rules of First Date Make-Up

6 Feb

DO give yourself plenty of time. Arriving in a flap with mascara smudged across your face is not a good first impression.

DON’T wear bright lipstick – not unless you’re definitely not intending to kiss them! (if all else fails have wet wipes close by)

DO stick to your personal style. Always wear blue flicky eyeliner? Then he better accept from the start. (Unless your signature style is red lipstick, in which case, see above).

DON’T over-do it. ‘Applied with a trowel’ is not a good look.

DO take a little mirror on your bag. That way you can check just before arrival that you haven’t managed to mess it up.

DON’T worry if you’re having a bad skin day. Just invest in a brilliant concealer and remember that you always notice these things way more than anyone else.

DO go to the ladies during the evening to make sure you haven’t wiped your face off during that passionate conversation about why you’re so pleased Clapham now has a Waitrose.

DON’T wear so much hairspray he has to go outside for a breather every half an hour.

DO take a compliment – DON’T cackle and shout “you should SEE me without make-up” when you get one.

New CID Cosmetics sponsor The Bodyguard

7 Jan

There are so many West End musicals I want to see at the moment (Viva Forever tickets have already been booked) and having heard good reports from friend who have seen The Bodyguard, it’s definitely on the list.

I didn’t even know shows could have their own ‘Official Make Up Sponsor” these days, but New CID Cosmetics have claimed that title for The Bodyguard, and launched this little lip gloss and eye shadow selection in celebration.

photo (27)The two lip glosses are new shades, and contain a little bulb in the lid for more precise application even in poor lighting (rolling around drunkenly in the back of taxi springs to mind).

new-cid-lipglossThe three cream eyeshadows have a very mousse-y texture, as I discovered by accidentally poking my finger right through the middle of one. The top left shade, Spotlight, is a pearly lilac colour for highlighting; top right is Diva, a nice metallic aubergine that I can image Whitney rocking beautifully, and finally there’s the smoky grey Melody, which actually comes out as a lovely glittery silver. I’ve never really been sure about wearing greys and silvers with my hazel eyes, but I think if you either had dark, blue or green eyes, this selection would look lovely.

Best Beauty Gifts on a Budget

27 Nov

There’s an advent calendar in our office. I’ve gone out wearing a sequin dress. There are scarves with reindeers on in the shops. Yes people – Christmas is coming.

Of course, along with this festive build-up, comes the obligatory Christmas gift guides in almost every publication – you know, the ones that try to convince men do really like ornaments in the shape of woodland animals and that buying your aunt an £150 cashmere scarf is the norm.

No people! It’s not! We’re all fricking poor – which is why all the beauty buys in my little gift guide are under £20. Woohoo.

topshop-eye-paletteTopshop Eye Palette in Atmosphere – £16

I love the look of this little palette – in fact it would be almost too good to use were it not for the lovely, shimmery colours contained within. Topshop eye shadows are generally highly-pigmented and long-lasting, and the shades in this palette are striking yet neutral enough to flatter all eye colours. A good call.

kate moss red lipstick

Rimmel Kate Lasting Finish Lipstick Shade 1 – £5.49

Give your loved one the gift of the ultimate red lip with this beautiful scarlet shade from Kate Moss’s Rimmel collection. I can vouch for the fact this suits loads of different skin tones having shared it with scores of girls in the ladies loos (classy bird) – although unfortunately I can’t guarantee it will make the recipient look like Mossy.

Barry M Nail Polish Gold

Barry M Nail Polish Gold – £2.99

The perfect stocking filler? I can’t tell you how much I love this gold polish – it’s got a beautiful, elegant sheen to it rather than being sparkly, sparkly. sparkly (not that I have a problem with that!) – and would be the perfect festive shade for teenagers and mothers alike.

max-factor-false-lash-effect-mascaraMax Factor False Lash Effect Mascara – £10.99

I’m yet to find someone who’s tried this mascara and not loved it. Personally I wouldn’t buy anything else – it has AMAZING lengthening, thickening and defining effects on the lashes, to the point where I have actually been asked lots of times if I’m wearing falsies. To which I reply “oh darling it’s all natural” of course.

Max Factor Color X-Pert Eye Liner in Lilac – £6.99

Another Max Factor one – this is the best coloured liquid liner I’ve come across, and a great gift for anyone who likes to be a bit adventurous with their make up without going completely wild. The colour is eye-catching yet pretty, and the application is very easy thanks to a non-spindly brush. I do hate a spindly brush.

Paris Fashion Week S/S 13 Make Up Trends

chanel icy blue eyesTHE TREND: ICY BLUE

If I imagine a Chanel woman, it’s someone elegant and daring, pretty yet icily aloof. The metallic ice blues and silvers used in the eye make-up at the Grand Palais show translated this perfectly. This is definitely a trend everyone can get involved with, even if you only use the colour on the lid and under the eyes, rather than right up to the brow bone. On a personal note I love the fact the glacial colour is teamed with strong black eyeliner, because I feel naked without it! Maybelline’s Colour Tattoo 24 Hour Cream Gel shadows would be perfect for recreating this eyeshadow –  they do great silver and blue shades that last for ages.

louis-vuitton-beehives-and-bows-beautyTHE TREND: BEEHIVES AND BOWS

Against a bright chequerboard of colour, the Louis Vuitton hair team evoked a swinging sixties feel with cute updos, side-swept fringes and pretty bows tied around the head. These are not the big, garish bows as popularised by Gaga, Minnie Mouse et al., but a more refined version that remind me of chic French schoolgirls and Blair off Gossip Girl. Creating the perfect beehive can be tricky, but Company have a great step by step here.

dior-full-on-eyeshadowTHE TREND: FULL ON COLOUR

Not one for the faint-hearted, this striking look from Dior features colour-blocked, embellished eyelids in bright, bold colours. A great one for the fashion fearless out there to try – for the rest of us losers, a crazy shade of eyeliner from Barry M might have to be our homage to the look.

Balmain Catwalk - Paris Fashion WeekTHE TREND: DISHEVELLED CHIC

The idea behind many catwalk hairstyles was simple – create a perfect do, then muss it up a bit. Braids were also huge – at Balmain we saw both trends combined in a swept-back, low key but pretty look. To recreate this, loosely scrape the hair back and plait it, then pull out a few wispy strands and fix with hairspray. Simple!

rochas-bright-lipTHE TREND: LUSCIOUS LIPS

I am a huge fan of a punchy lip colour, so don’t need any persuading to embrace the bright lip trend as seen on the Rochas catwalk. However I’m not so sure I can cope with the make-up free eyes – maybe a slick of mascara to complement my vibrant lip colour and I’ll be happy! Revlon Super Luscious Lipstick in Fire & Ice is a good one for this.

Milan Fashion Week – White eyes at Moschino

24 Sep

moschino-lindsey-wixsonI like to think of myself as reasonably adventurous when it comes to make-up, and I’m sure my dear brother, who often asks whether I’ve “painted my face with Crayolas again” would agree.

However, I’m not sure whether I’m going to attempt the full-on white eye shadow look from the Moschino show at Milan Fashion Week – as seen here on top model Linsdey Wixson.

Although it’s certainly striking, I can tell this is a trend that probably doesn’t translate from catwalk to soggy-commute-to-work very well.

I reckon a more subtle take on the Moschino look is the way to go here – as you can see from the image below, a little white eye shadow in the inner corners of the eye leaves eyes looking bright and sparkling. Although I guess with a face like that, it’s kinda hard to go wrong!

You can see my post on London Fashion Week S/S 13 Make Up trends here.

London Fashion Week S/S 13 Make Up Trends

17 Sep

Sultry, feline eyesglossy, jewel-tone lips and lightly tanned skin paid homage to the 1970s at Issa’s London Fashion Week show. A beautiful, flattering look, this could be worn anywhere from the office to a first date (70s disco dancing optional).

Looking liked they’d just stepped home from a sunny stroll, models at Maria Graschvogel’s show were given a youthful, natural look perfect for the spring. Flawless, dewy looking skin is the focus for this trend – couple it with just a slick of mascara and nude lip gloss.

Let your eyes do the talking with this striking look from Moschino, teaming electric blue eyeliner with a barely-there base and subtle lips. Easy to achieve with a swipe of vivid colour, this is a look that’s bound to be popular at summer festivals and parties.

Outlandish eye shadows and chalky pink lipstick complemented the psychedelic sixties feel of PPQ’s London Fashion Week show, creating a daring summer look for the true fashionista. For a subtler version of this look, stick to just one statement feature.

Eyebrows were strong and eyelids had a warm, copper glow at the Sass & Bide show, providing a cool, rock chick look with laidback attitude. For this trend, choose a matte base and add a sweep of bronze eyeshadow before emphasizing brows with an eyebrow pencil.
